The AISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) meets the third Monday of every month
What is SHAC?
The School Board has established a local health advisory council to assist the District in ensuring the local community values and health issues are reflected in the District’s health education instruction. The Board has appointed members to the council, a majority of which are parents of students enrolled in the District. Other representatives are public school teachers, public school administers, health care providers, and members of the business community.
What do they do?
The SHAC has a variety of roles addressing all components of a comprehensive school health program. The components include:
Health instruction
Healthful school environment
Health Services
Physical education
Schooling counseling
Food Service
Health promotion for staff
Integrated school and community programs
The local school health advisory council’s duties include recommending:
The number of hours of instruction to be provided in health education
Health education curriculum appropriate for specific grade levels that may include a coordinated health education program designed to prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease, and Type ll diabetes.
Instruction to prevent the use of tobacco
Appropriate grade levels and methods of instruction for human sexuality education
