Reagan Elementary partners with the Early Childhood Program by housing three early childhood classrooms offering Pre-K services to 78 four-year-old children who would have otherwise been on a waiting list. Pre-K is a state-funded program for preschool age children that offers a developmentally appropriate and academically rich curriculum designed to prepare children to be "school ready." The curriculum follows the Texas Pre-K Curriculum Guidelines and stresses language development, mathematics, emergent literacy, phonemic awareness, and social-emotional development. Children participate in developmental screening within 45 days of enrollment to determine their individual needs. Learning activities are then tailored to meet each child’s unique needs in a fun and developmentally appropriate classroom environment. On-going assessment is conducted three times annually to assess children’s progress toward school readiness goals and the resulting data is used to inform the teachers of the instruction and remediation that is needed. Children qualify for Pre-K by meeting one of the following criteria: being a military dependant, participating in the USDA Free and Reduced Price Lunch program, being a limited English speaker, having been in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services, or being homeless as defined by the McKinney-Vento Act. Because of limited space the AISD program only serves children who are four years old on or before September 1st of the school year.
