 First Things First!

We have almost made it through our year inFirst Grade!!  We have grown and learnedso much this year.  The teachers are soproud of your children with all their hard work they did.  We’ve got one more month of hard work aheadand then a well-deserved summer vacation! Make sure we continue reading, writing, and math skills through thesummer to make sure we stay ready for 2nd Grade!

Reading, Writing and Spelling:  We’ll be continuing to learn how to be betterreaders and writers by making connections to the things we read.  We want to be able to relate personalexperiences, feelings, predictions, and other ways we connect toliterature.  We are still working hard onwriting and still need lots of practice. We will start trying to write and keep things in chronological order, learn how to write about things we have researched, use our best handwriting, and use capitals and punctuation.  Helpyour child make writing fun at home. Continue working on the spelling words sent home in the newsletter eachweek.  Say the word out loud and haveyour child practice writing the word without assistance.  You can get creative too!  Use sidewalk chalk, shaving cream, or markersto practice.

Math: We’ll be learning about all the ways we can measure materials.  We’ll learn about length, weight and mass, capacity, and area.  We will alsocontinue learning addition and subtraction to 18 and place value to 100.

Science and Social Studies: We love todiscover! We will be investigating life cycles and environments.  We’ll learn all about how different animalsgrow and where they live.  In SocialStudies we’ll learn about how technology has changed and how it affects ourlives.  We will also learn about whatmakes good citizens and what good citizens do.

Homework: Please do your child’s fluencyfolder each week.  It will make such adifference in your child’s reading!  Youwill be amazed how your child improves when you read every day.  Follow the instructions and bring the folderback each Friday.  We will send home anew story each week.  Also, continuedoing the activities sent home in the weekly newsletter.  This will help your child become a betterreader and writer!  Remember to do theSaxon Phonics homework each night!  Justfollow the directions and bring it back to school the next day.  And don’t forget to practice the Dolch sightwords kit.  Work on one list at a time, and when your child has mastered the list, tell the teacher and we’ll test yourchild.  When your child can read the list3 different times, we’ll mark off the list and you can work on the next one.
