Abilene ISD is pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph Waldron, Ed.D., has been promoted to the position of deputy superintendent, effective immediately. As deputy superintendent, Waldron will serve as second-in-command to the superintendent of schools and is authorized to lead AISD when the superintendent is out of district.
Prior to his promotion, Waldron most recently served as AISD’s associate superintendent for operations. He first joined Abilene ISD in 2019 as the district’s associate superintendent of human resources before shifting to the role of chief financial officer from 2020-2023.
“I am truly honored and my family is blessed beyond measure to step into this important role for the future of Abilene ISD,” said Waldron. “I am poised and ready to get to work as we build the strongest educational opportunities for students in the Big Country, unmatched in scope and diversity. Abilene ISD is the heartbeat of the city of Abilene, and I am proud to be a part of the team leading that work.”
Waldron’s 23 years of public education experience include service as the superintendent of schools for Lefors ISD and Morris Community High School District #101 in Illinois. He has also served as an assistant superintendent, principal, and assistant principal in Childress ISD, and as a high school biology and junior high science teacher in Wichita Falls ISD.
“Dr. Waldron is a precise thinker who provides deep and specific knowledge across a broad range of areas in public education,” said Dr. John Kuhn, Abilene ISD superintendent. “I am confident he is the right person to help initiate bold strategies that will lead AISD to success now and in the future.”
Dr. Waldron holds a doctorate in global educational leadership from Lamar University, as well as master’s degrees from Governors State University and Midwestern State University. He has served the Abilene community as a board member for the United Way of Abilene since 2019.
