The District 4-5A girls’ basketball race reaches the halfway point of the schedule tonight, while the boys’ teams are two games into their district championship race. The Cooper boys and girls will play at Cougar Gym tonight, hosting Wichita Falls Legacy, and both Abilene High teams are off after losing a doubleheader at Wylie on Tuesday at Bulldog Gym.

The Cooper girls will host Legacy at 6 p.m., and the boys’ game will be played at 7:30 p.m.

The Cooper girls are 1-25 overall and 0-3 in district play but are still in the playoff chase. The Lady Cougars are one-half game behind Legacy (8-15 and 1-2) for fourth place in the district standings. With only eight district games on the schedule and the top four teams in each district reaching the playoffs, the Lady Cougars still have a chance to get into position to reach the postseason.

The Cooper boys are 8-11 overall and 0-1 in district play and will host a Legacy team that enters the game tied for second in the district standings at 12-8 and 1-1.  Legacy is tied with Abilene High and Wichita Falls Memorial for second in the district behind Wylie (12-9 and 1-0).

Wylie picked up that win Tuesday night with a 55-52 victory over the Abilene High boys at Bulldog Gym. AHS point guard Brooks Reese led all scorers with 26 points, and Connel Colley – who had a good look at a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final seconds – had 11 points for the Eagles.

The Abilene High girls have already completed the first half of district play with a record of 14-14 and 2-2. The Lady Eagles dropped a 49-24 decision Tuesday at Wylie and were led in scoring by Samia Cooper with eight points.

Abilene High will be on the road Tuesday at Wichita Falls Memorial, with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m. Cooper will be home Tuesday for a doubleheader against Wylie. The girls will play at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.
