The Abilene ISD Board of Trustees held a regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 9.

Superintendent’s Updates (03:23)

During the superintendent’s updates, Dr. John Kuhn encouraged families and community members to consider participating on the Districtwide Consultation Committee (DWCC) for the 2024-25 school year. The DWCC advises the superintendent on district business and school improvement topics. Click here to learn more.

Dr. Kuhn also shared that Cooper High School will hold a Hall of Fame induction on Friday at 9 a.m. during the school’s homecoming pep rally. Click here to read about the new inductees.  

Finally, Abilene ISD schools have created a friendly competition encouraging students to prioritize school attendance during National School Attendance Awareness Month.

Recognitions (09:47)

More than 1,100 educators from across the state participated in the Texas Education Agency’s state assessments review committees, including two teachers from Abilene ISD. Taylor Elementary School’s Barbara Carneiro and Stafford Elementary School’s Sydney Beverage volunteered their experience by reviewing and revising test questions and sharing insight into the difficulty and appropriateness of state-level assessment content.

Start-of-School Enrollment Update (14:07)

Associate Superintendent for Student Services Dr. Gustavo Villanueva presented an annual update on start-of-school enrollment. At the time of the report, 14,616 students were enrolled in Abilene ISD, 90 less students than the same time last year. Notably, AISD welcomed 134 new elementary school students and 434 new students who transferred from neighboring school districts. 

Taylor and Jones County Appraisal Districts Board of Directors (23:02)

Executive Director of Finance Jennifer Hinds reported on the district’s plans for appointing board members to the Taylor and Jones County Appraisal Districts’ Boards of Directors. In years past, AISD has appointed two members to each board. This year, AISD will appoint one member to each board due to legislative changes in Senate Bill 2, which applies to counties with a population over 75,000. 

Action Items (32:30)

The board took action on one item during the meeting, approving several updates to Policy 123 (Legal and Local) regarding public information, personnel management, and instructional materials. For a complete list of updates to the policy, click here
