2025-26 Academic Calendar Development: The board received an update on the development of the 2025-26 academic calendar. A key change in both drafts is the shift from 6-week to 9-week grading periods. Both drafts are available for review at this link. The board plans to vote on the final calendar at their meeting on Jan. 13, 2025. Thank you to staff, families, and students participating in the calendar feedback process.
Superintendent’s Announcements | 08:53
During his announcements, Superintendent Dr. John Kuhn shared a testimonial from Director of Student Nutrition Kandace Grenwelge, who praised the success of an annual service project at Madison Middle School that provides Thanksgiving meals to families in need. The food for the meals is generously donated by Madison staff and families, along with support from Communities of Abilene and local churches. The project began years ago under the leadership of Madison Student Nutrition Manager Michelene Holley. Since then, the initiative has grown to serve nearly 100 families at Madison Middle School each year.
Dr. Kuhn also introduced the next edition of the Teaching Minute video series, featuring Madison Middle School teacher Kylee Zonker and her application of TEKS Math Readiness Standard 8.4C.

TEA STAAR Rangefinding Committee Participant April Brannan
Stafford Elementary School teacher April Brannan was recognized for her selection to participate in the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) rangefinding committee. As a committee member, April played a key part in ensuring the fairness and consistency of STAAR assessment scoring by analyzing student responses and helping to develop training materials for educators.
TAEA District of Distinction
For the fourth consecutive year, the Abilene ISD Fine Arts Department has earned the prestigious District of Distinction designation in visual arts. To receive this honor, the program submitted a comprehensive portfolio of materials that met the standards of a 14-point evaluation rubric. This recognition by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) places AISD among the top 5.5% of visual arts programs in the state.
TAEA Principal of the Year
Abilene High School Principal Emme Siburt was also recognized for receiving the TAEA’s 2024 School Principal of the Year award. The honor is awarded to one non-TAEA member school administrator who demonstrates exceptional support for art education and the visual arts. Click here to learn more about Ms. Siburt’s recognition.
Public Hearing for the 2023-24 Financial Accountability Rating System of Texas (School FIRST) | 48:32
Executive Director of Finance Jennifer Hinds led a public hearing on the 2023-24 Financial Accountability Rating System of Texas. This system holds Texas public schools accountable for the effective management and continuous improvement of their financial resources. For the 13th consecutive year, Abilene ISD received a 'Superior' rating on its 2023-24 report. Notably, one area of improvement highlighted in this year's report is the reduction in administrative costs.
Special Education Department Report | 58:46
Executive Director for Special Education Teri Reece presented a comprehensive department report for the district’s special education programs. AISD provides a wide range of services for students who meet the eligibility criteria for special education, including:
General education with accommodations
General education with content mastery
Modified classes/programs
Self-contained classes
Homebound instruction
Adult transition services for students aged 18+
Currently, AISD employs 112 special education teachers. New this year is an expansion of Soundwave, the district’s innovative and adaptive music program for special education students. Soundwave Director Eric Logan has introduced ‘Chime Time,’ a new initiative for middle school students. This program introduces the concept of handbell choirs and aims to spark early interest in music and high school participation in Soundwave.

Woodson Elementary School Facility Donation: The board has authorized Superintendent Dr. John Kuhn to begin negotiations with the Interested Citizens of Abilene North, a local nonprofit organization, regarding the donation of the Woodson Elementary School facility. The organization intends to turn the property into a community center while preserving its historical significance.
LASO Strong Foundations Implementation Grant Application: The board approved the district’s application for the Learning Acceleration Support Opportunities (LASO) Strong Foundations Implementation (SFI) grant. This grant provides direct funding to local educational agencies for technical assistance in the effective implementation of the Bluebonnet Learning instructional materials.
