The Abilene ISD Board of Trustees held a workshop and regular meeting on Monday, July 8.

District and Campus Improvement Plans
During the Board workshop, the trustees heard a report related to district and campus improvement planning. District leadership conducted a districtwide needs assessment earlier this spring, and the following priority needs emerged:

  • Positive communication

  • Continued support for the whole educator

  • Closing achievement gaps, particularly for emerging bilingual students

  • Engaging teachers in meaningful conversations about effective use of digital resources

These priority needs help to inform district and campus goal setting, performance objective development, and strategies for improvement.

Student Recognitions 06:00
During the recognitions portion of the agenda, the Board recognized state gymnastic competitors and track qualifiers from Abilene and Cooper High Schools.

Congratulations to the following students:

  • Cooper’s Jazlyn Hatcher, who earned a silver medal in long jump.

  • Ryland Bradford, Bryson Perez, Brayden Henry, and Jaden Jackson, the members of the Abilene High School 4×100 relay team who placed eighth at state.

  • Tristan Reyna, who won a state gymnastics title in vault and placed third in all-around.

  • Evan Banks, Korban Jackson, and Aaron Grow who also competed at the gymnastics state meet and placed in the top 10 in their respective events.

Every Student Succeeds Act Public Hearing and Grant Application 16:50
The Board also held an annual public hearing related to the district’s ESSA grant application. The Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA, is a federal law that helps ensure school success by supporting equal access to a quality education for all students. ESSA provides protections for high-need students, requires that all students in America be taught according to high academic standards, and ensures that educators and families have the ability to measure student progress toward success in college and careers. Abilene ISD schools are eligible to receive federal grant funding via ESSA to target identified needs.

In 2023-24, Abilene ISD received more than $7 million in ESSA funding to support student and school success. This year, adjustments to the district’s ESSA funding request include support for supplementary staffing related to behavior intervention, family engagement, and instructional support, as well as funding for instructional supplies, materials, and technology.

Construction Update 32:03
Schneider Electric provided its final update on ongoing construction projects aimed at modernizing infrastructure and increasing utility efficiency. The company estimates that the updates will result in a 24.6 percent decrease in utility consumption districtwide. The final projects will be complete this summer and include 25 door replacements, glass, trim, and finish.

The board took action on the following items:
