An important message from Abilene ISD

In Abilene ISD, our daily standard is to ensure the safety of our students and communicate effectively with our parents. We missed our mark last week when a Taylor Elementary family did not receive timely or adequate communication from us after their student received care in the nurse’s office for an accidental playground injury.

“I am truly sorry to the family involved for their student’s injury and thankful that we had the opportunity to hear from them,” said Dr. John Kuhn, AISD’s superintendent of schools. “Parents and families, we know you are counting on us to get it right for your kids. When we get it wrong, my guarantee to you is that we will take full responsibility for making it right.”

We are taking immediate action to make sure this does not happen again, including reviewing our student healthcare procedures, retraining nurses on contacting families after they evaluate students, and providing additional certified nursing assistants for our largest campuses. Abilene ISD parents and families can always expect to receive a phone call from their campus if their student experiences an injury at school.

“Keeping students safe and families informed are our top priorities at Taylor,” said Leslye Roberts, principal at Taylor Elementary. “There is nothing more important to us than our children. We will continue to work directly with the family involved to provide everything their student needs to remain successful.”

We take the trust you place in us by sending your children to our schools extremely seriously. You deserve our best effort to communicate openly and honestly with you about their well-being. Thank you for your partnership and support as we continue to build the best version of Abilene ISD for everyone in our community.

Sincerely,

Abilene ISD
